Women, Children Killed In Afghan Graveyard Blast

A wounded boy receives treatment at a hospital in Jalalabad after an explosion in the Ghani Khel district of Nangarhar province, which killed at least 14 people.

GHANI KHEL, Afghanistan -- Afghan officials say 14 members of the same family have been killed in a bomb explosion at a cemetery in eastern Afghanistan.

The attack happened in Nangarhar Province's Ghani Khel district on August 8.

Masum Khan Hashimi, the local deputy police chief, said the dead comprised seven women and seven children.

Three other family members were injured in the blast. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack.

The incident came as the country celebrated the Eid al-Fitr holiday marking the end of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.

Many Muslims visit the graves of deceased relatives during Eid.

In his annual Eid message, President Hamid Karzai condemned the bombing and called on the Taliban to lay down their weapons and join Afghan-led peace talks.
