Officials in Afghanistan say at least 45 people are feared dead after they became trapped in snow when an avalanche struck two remote villages in northeast Afghanistan.
Authorities said the avalanche on March 12 hit the villages of Poshan and Ghadoor in the Mondol district of Nuristan Province.
Nearby villagers have been working to try to locate victims and survivors.
Rescue operations are reportedly being hampered by heavy snow blocking roads leading into the district, near the border with Pakistan.
Avalanches are common in the mountainous northern provinces of Afghanistan.
An entire village in northern Badakhshan Province was overwhelmed by an avalanche last week. The UN said 145 people are missing and presumed dead in that avalanche.
