TIRANA -- One person has been killed and two injured in a shooting at a polling station in the Albanian town of Lac.
The shooting occurred on June 23 as Albanians were voting in closely contested parliamentary elections. One of the injured was Mehill Futhi, a candidate for the Democratic Party of Prime Minister Sali Berisha.
Berisha called for calm after the incident.
The shooting reportedly followed a dispute between Democratic Party supporters and backers of the leftist Socialist Movement for Integration.
The election to fill 140 parliamentary seats could be crucial for Albania's ambitions to join the European Union.
The EU has said the vote must comply with international standards if the bloc is to launch accession talks with Tirana.
Albania applied for EU membership in 2009.
