International envoy Kofi Annan says he held "very good discussions" in Baghdad with Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki about Syria and will brief the UN Security Council on July 11.
Annan, who is on a regional tour, said earlier on July 10 in Tehran that Damascus had agreed to a new UN-brokered peace plan.
He said the plan, which would aim to bring peace to the most restive areas first, then extend it to the rest of the country, still must be presented to the Syrian opposition.
In Tehran, Annan met with Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi.
The UN envoy said Iran can play a "positive" role in resolving the Syrian crisis, but did not specify what support Iran has offered to resolve the conflict.
