Another Convict Reportedly Executed In Belarus

Minsk-based Vyasna (Spring) human rights center says that another convict has been executed in Belarus.

Paval Selyun, 23, was sentenced to death last year for murder of his wife and her lover.

Vyasna cited the mother of Paval Selyun on April 18 as saying that she learned from her son's lawyer that "the sentence had been implemented."

Selyun's relatives had not been informed about the date of the execution, which is a legal practice in Belarus, where relatives are informed by mail about execution several days after it takes place.

Vyasna says Selyun was executed before the UN Committee on Human Rights looked into his appeal.

Belarus is the only country in Europe that carries out executions. The last murder convict, Eduard Lykov, 53, was executed in Belarus in December.
