Reports from the Caucasus suggest tensions between Armenia and Azerbaijan continue to grow over Nagorno-Karabakh, with both Baku and Yerevan accusing each other of launching artillery barrages against the other.
The Defense Ministry in Yerevan said on May 2 that Azerbaijani troops fired artillery shells across the border into northeastern Armenia overnight.
Armenia did not report any casualties.
Meanwhile, the Defense Ministry in Baku said on May 2 that Armenian troops and Armenia-backed separatist fighters in the breakaway region of Nagorno-Karabakh fired more than 112 artillery shells at Azerbaijani Army positions during the previous 24 hours.
Baku said the Armenian artillery targeted Azerbaijani troops “in the hills along the border between the two countries and the areas adjacent to Nagorno-Karabakh."
Baku also did not report any casualties.
On April 2, Nagorno-Karabakh and nearby regions saw the worst fighting since a cease-fire deal was reached in 1994 in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
A new cease-fire deal went into effect on April 5, but that shaky truce increasingly is being violated.
