An Armenian soldier serving in the disputed territory of Nagorno-Karabakh has been killed by gunfire coming from Azerbaijan.
Armenian Defense Ministry spokesman Artsrun Hovgannisyan said on October 2 that Karabakh Army soldier David Navasardyan "died of fatal wounds after Azerbaijani forces opened fire on October 1."
Exchanges of gunfire along the front-line boundary that separates Nagorno-Karabakh and Azerbaijan have been common.
Tensions flared in early August and dozens of people on were killed along the disputed border during a brief period of heightened hostilities.
The breakaway republic of Nagorno-Karabakh is now inhabited almost entirely by ethnic Armenians but is located within Azerbaijan’s internationally recognized borders.
A truce has been in effect since 1994 but there has been little progress since then in negotiations for a permanent peace settlement.
