At Least Two Firefighters Shot Dead In New York State

At least two volunteer firefighters have been shot dead and two more wounded in western New York state.

The firefighters were responding to a blaze in a house on the shore of Lake Ontario in the town of Webster on December 24.

Police say the firefighters were ambushed by a gunman as they responded to an early morning house fire.

The town's police chief Gerald Pickering says the gunman is dead and that an off-duty police officer has injuries from shrapnel.

He was driving by the scene of the shooting.

The incident comes just 10 days after a mass shooting in an elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut.

On December 14, gunman Adam Lanza killed 20 children and six adults in the Sandy Hook Elementary school.
