Azerbaijan's Ruling Party Nominates Aliyev For Another Presidential Term

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev is already in his fourth term since being handed the reins of power by his dying father, Heydar Aliyev, in 2003.

The leadership of the ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) has nominated Ilham Aliyev for a new presidential term ahead of a February vote in the dynastic, oil-rich Caucasus nation. The 61-year-old authoritarian leader is already in his fourth term since being handed the reins of power by his dying father, Heydar Aliyev, in 2003. The last presidential election, in 2018, and other Azerbaijani votes have fallen short of democratic standards in the view of OSCE election monitors. The rubberstamp legislature set the presidential vote for February 7, a year ahead of schedule in a move decried by the opposition.
