BAKU -- A well-known player of Azerbaijan’s Qabala FK soccer club, who is a suspect in a case related to the beating of a journalist to death, has been remanded in custody.

A court in Baku rejected on August 27 the motion by Cavid Huseynov’s lawyers to transfer their client under house arrest.

Journalist Rasim Aliyev, 30, died in a Baku hospital on August 9 after being beaten the previous day.

Huseynov and five other suspects were arrested on August 11. Huseynov was charged with not reporting a crime.

He may face up to five years in jail if found guilty.

Also on August 27, several journalists picketed the Baku City Prosecutor’s Office, demanding "a proper punishment" for Aliyev’s attackers.

Aliyev, 30, said while in hospital that he was attacked by supporters of Huseynov in retaliation for criticism of Huseynov that Aliyev posted on his Facebook page.
