Azerbaijan Says Seven Soldiers Killed In 'Criminal' Shooting

Seven Azerbaijani soldiers were killed on February 20 in what the Defense Ministry says was "a serious crime," RFE/RL's Azerbaijani Service reports.

Reports say a soldier opened fire on his fellow servicemen. Those killed were 20 or 21 years of age. The Defense Ministry and Military Prosecutor's Office have launched an investigation.

Ehtiram Huseynov, an uncle of one of the victims, Ahmad Huseynov, told RFE/RL his family had been informed there was "an attack on a military unit and that seven people were victims of the shooting."

In January 2010, two Azerbaijani soldiers opened fire on a group of officers, killing four and wounding two before the shooters committed suicide.
