Azerbaijanis, Turks Mark Anniversary Of Karabakh War

Some 50,000 Azerbaijanis marched through Baku on February 26 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the country's war with Armenian forces over the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh region.

The Azerbaijani authorities say that 613 people died when Armenian troops attacked the village of Khojaly in Karabakh in 1992 in what Baku describes as "genocide," a charge Yerevan strongly rejects.

Reports say that thousands of Turks also rallied to mark the anniversary on February 26.

Turkey's Interior Minister Idris Sahin made a nationalist speech at the rally in Istanbul, estimated at between 20,000 and 50,000 participants.

Azerbaijan has repeatedly threatened to use force to win back Karabakh if negotiations fail to yield satisfactory results.
