British TV Crew To Be Deported From Bahrain

Antigovernment protesters flash victory signs as they burn tires in Budaiya, west of the capital, Manama, on April 22.

Journalists from Britain's Channel 4 News were briefly detained in Bahrain on April 22 for trying to film a protest and, after being released, were told they would be deported.

The channel's foreign affairs correspondent, Jonathan Martin, tweeted that he and his crew were set free but that their Bahraini driver and an activist with them when they were detained remained in police custody.

The British TV crew was in Bahrain to report on the Formula One Grand Prix that was held despite at times violent protests in the days leading up to the sporting event.

A crackdown ahead of the race left at least one protester dead.

The protests were led by Bahrain's majority Shi'ites, who are demanding political reforms from the ruling Sunni royal family.

The Channel 4 News crew left the race early to go to a village outside the capital and film protests.
