Belarusian activist Palina Sharenda-Panasyuk has gone on a hunger strike in protest against the unacceptable conditions in the detention center where she is being held in the city of Rechitsa, southeast of Minsk, the Vyasna human rights center said on August 28. Sharenda-Panasyuk, an activist of European Belarus, was detained in January 2021 on charges including insulting the president. Panasyuk was sentenced to two years in prison and fined 4,500 Belarusian rubles (around $1,800). The activist has rejected the charges as politically motivated.
