Exiled Belarusian opposition leader Svyatlana Tsikhanouskaya was announced as a recipient of the 2022 Tipperary International Peace Award in recognition of her activities for democracy in Belarus, the Tipperary Peace Convention in Ireland said on March 8. Tsikhanouskaya spent time in Tipperary as a child, where she was brought with other children from radiation-hit areas in Belarus following the Chernobyl nuclear disaster in Ukraine in 1986. The prestigious award's past recipients include the late South African president, Nelson Mandela, former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, and Pakistani girls' rights activist Malala Yousafzai.
