U.S. Vice President Joe Biden has offered condolences to the families of Serbs who were killed in NATO air strikes during the Kosovo conflict in 1999. Biden's comments came on August 16, after talks in Belgrade with Serbian Prime Minister Aleksander Vucic. They mark the first such gesture by a high-ranking U.S. official. U.S.-led NATO forces launched 11 weeks of airstrikes against Yugoslavia, forcing the withdrawal of Serbian forces from Kosovo in June 1999. (RFE/RL's Balkan Service)
