A suicide bomber has killed at least five people near a police complex in the eastern Pakistani city of Lahore.

Punjab provincial Health Minister Khawaja Salman Rafiq said 23 people were injured in the blast on February 17.

Security officials said the bomber walked up the main gate of the police complex in Lahore and donated his explosives when approached by officers.

A Pakistani Taliban splinter group claimed responsibility for the attack.

The group, called Jamaat ul-Ahrar, said it was in response to the recent executions of some of its members by the Pakistani government.

Security forces have stepped up their efforts against militancy after Pakistani Taliban fighters killed 151 people in a December 16 school massacre in the northwestern city of Peshawar.
