Bosnian police fatally shot the country's most-wanted fugitive after the man killed a police officer and another person, sparking а massive nationwide manhunt.
Edin Gacic died on February 12 after a shootout with officers near Sarajevo, police official Suvada Kuldija told RFE/RL. One officer was slightly wounded by gunfire.
Gacic, 42, was suspected of killing a grocery store owner and a police officer last week. The killings had sparked panic in the country.
After a nationwide manhunt involving hundreds of security officers, investigators located Gacic in a snow-covered mountainous area, Sarajevo Interior Ministry official Mevludin Halilovic told reporters.
Gacic had served two prison sentences for murder but was released in 2017, two-thirds of the way through a 20-year prison term.
Some Bosnian officials have criticized the prison system, questioning why Gacic had gotten early release, despite a violent past.
