Journalist Indira Sinanović is running for the municipal council in the Bosnian city of Zenica. If elected in the October 2 vote, she'll be the first woman who wears the niqab to hold public office in the country. While some Bosnian Muslim women wear the hijab, or head scarf, the face-covering niqab is relatively rare. Sinanović, who says she has faced discrimination for her religious dress, wants to use her potential role to fight for minority rights and to help women become more politically engaged.
