Russian mixed-martial-arts champion Khabib Nurmagomedov has thwarted a bid by Ireland's Conor McGregor to regain the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) lightweight title with a dominant submission victory in a match marred by a postfight brawl.

Nurmagomedov's October 6 victory in the fourth round in Las Vegas, Nevada, stretched the ethnic Avar Daghestani fighter's professional record to 27-0.

After the referee waved off the fight, Nurmagomedov jumped out of the Octagon fence and headed for mixed-martial-arts legend McGregor's training partner Dillon Danis, prompting a series of violent scuffles.

As security tried to quell the chaos in the crowd, someone leapt inside the cage and landed several blows on McGregor before security intervened.

Both fighters were escorted from the arena by police and security.

UFC President Dana White later said that three members of Nurmagomedov's team were detained.
