British Spies 'Uncover Plot' To Murder Chechen Leader Zakayev

Chechen separatist leader Akhmed Zakayev

Britain's “Sunday Telegraph” newspaper has reported that British security services have uncovered a plot to assassinate exiled Chechen separatist leader Akhmed Zakayev in London.

The newspaper claims to have seen court documents outlining the MI5 security agency's fears that Ramzan Kadyrov, the Kremlin-backed head of the Russian republic of Chechnya, wanted former rebel commander Zakayev killed.

The claim comes after a gunman shot Russian banker German Gorbuntsov in the British capital on March 20.

Gorbuntsov remains seriously ill in hospital.

Meanwhile, Alvi Karimova, Kadyrov's press secretary, rejected the claims.
