January 1, 2013:

Belarus/CIS: Belarus takes over rotating chairmanship of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) for 2013.

EU: Ireland takes over the presidency of the Council of the European Union (to June 30).

Georgia/GUAM: Georgia assumes the GUAM presidency 2013.

Kyrgyzstan/CSTO: Kyrgyzstan presides over the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in 2013.

Pakistan: Pakistan assumes the office of the UN Security Council presidency for one month (to January 31).

Russia: The so-called Dima Yakovlev law, which bans adoptions of Russian children by U.S. citizens, goes into effect.

Russia/G20: Russia presides over the Group of Twenty (G20) in 2013.

Russia/OECD: Russia joins the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA).

UK/G8: Britain assumes the Group of Eight (G8) leading industrialized nations presidency in 2013.

Ukraine/BSEC: Ukraine takes over the six-month chairmanship of the Organization of Black Sea Economic Cooperation (BSEC).

Ukraine/OSCE: Ukraine assumes the OSCE chairmanship in 2013.

UN: The UN International Year of Water Cooperation will be observed in 2013.
