Candidates Selected To Replace Bosnian Grand Mufti

Grand Mufti Mustafa Ceric is barred from running for a third term

Five candidates have been nominated to succeed Mustafa Ceric as Bosnia-Herzegovina's Muslim religious leader, the grand mufti.

Ceric, 60, a prominent cleric who has headed the country's Muslim community since 1993, will complete his second term as grand mufti in November and is barred from seeking a third.

The candidates seeking to succeed him are the muftis of Tuzla, Travnik, Sarajevo, and Zenica, and a professor of Islamic studies from Zenica.

Muamer Zukorlic, a mufti who leads one of the two Islamic communities in Serbia and who ran for president of Serbia earlier this year, rejected all calls to run for grand mufti of Bosnia.

The new grand mufti will be elected in September and will take over from Ceric on November 19.
