Car Bombs Kill At Least 12 In Baghdad

Two car bombs have exploded in central Baghdad killing at least 12 people.

The bombs went off during the evening of July 24, just hours after parliament elected a senior Kurdish lawmaker as president.

The explosions happened in the Karrada neighborhood, a district known for its abundance of restaurants and shops, shortly after dusk fell and people were able to break their Ramadan fast.

Meanwhile, in the city of Mosul, residents said militants from the Islamic State (formerly the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant) have blown up the Mosque of the Prophet Younis, or Jonah.

The militants ordered everyone out of the mosque saying it had become a place of apostasy.

In the Koran and the Bible, Jonah is the prophet said to have been swallowed by a whale.

The mosque was said to be over the place where Jonah is buried.
