Deadly Car Bomb Explodes Near Benghazi Hospital

People gather at the scene of the car-bomb explosion outside a hospital in Benghazi, Libya on May 13.

Reports from Libya say a car-bomb explosion outside a hospital in the country’s second-largest city has killed at least nine people.

Security officials said that the dead from the May 13 blast included children.

The AFP news agency quoted Deputy Interior Minister Abdullah Massoud as saying the bomb "totally destroyed a restaurant and seriously damaged nearby buildings."

The attack is the latest in a wave of violence that has shaken the eastern city in recent weeks.

Security remains precarious in Libya since the 2011 uprising that toppled long-time leader Muammar Qaddafi.

In April, a car bomb exploded outside the French Embassy in the capital, Tripoli, wounding two guards and several residents.
