Casualties In New Thailand, Cambodia Border Clash

Thai and Cambodian troops have exchanged artillery- and gunfire in a flare-up of a long-running border dispute, and their militaries said six soldiers were killed.

Both sides have blamed each other for the escalation of hostilities, which follows a four-day clash between the two nations in the same region in February.

Tensions between the neighbors have been high over the border Hindu temple of Preah Vihear, with both countries claiming a 4.6-square-kilometer plot of land near the temple.

The World Court ruled in 1962 that the temple belonged to Cambodia, but the two sides still contest the border demarcation in the area.

Thailand opposed a 2008 declaration by the UN's cultural and educational agency that gave the temple area World Heritage status under Cambodia's management.
