WATCH: Flooding reaches record high in Central Europe

Large areas of Central Europe have been hit by the worst flooding in decades following days of heavy rain.

At least four people have died and thousands have been evacuated as floodwaters hit parts of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Poland.

In the southeastern German city of Passau, one of the places worst hit by the flooding, officials said the situation was "dramatic."

In the Czech capital, Prague, schools were closed and public traffic disrupted as fire fighters erected flood barriers to protect the historic city center and workers evacuated parts of Prague Zoo.

A state of emergency has been declared in Austrian regions along the Danube, and dikes have burst in Poland's Lower Silesia region.

Meteorologists say the steady rains are expected to ease in the coming days.

The last time Central Europe saw similar flooding was in 2002, when 17 people were killed and damage was estimated at 20 billion euros.
