The head of Russia's Chechen Republic, Ramzan Kadyrov, has announced the sacking of the republic's government.

Meeting with deputy prime ministers in Grozny on May 17, Kadyrov said that "due to new challenges in the republic, I decided to replace the current cabinet."

Kadyrov also said the government would undergo structural and personnel changes.

He did not elaborate on the decisions.

The Kremlin-backed Kadyrov, a former Chechen rebel fighter, has been in power as leader of the Chechen Republic since February 2007.
