Chinese President Hu Jintao and his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev today pledged to expand cooperation in oil and energy, and discussed global security issues.
Hu and Medvedev met in the southern Chinese resort of Sanya, where the leaders of the five emerging economies comprising the so-called BRICS bloc are due to hold a summit on Thursday.
State media quoted Hu as telling Medvedev that China wanted to expand cooperation by developing a second oil pipeline from Russia to China and other energy projects.
Medvedev reportedly called for expanding trade volume on both sides, and promoting cooperation in key fields such as oil, gas, water and nuclear energy.
The two leaders also discussed Libya, Afghanistan, the Korean Peninsula and other regional issues.
The BRICS grouping consists of Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
