CHISINAU -- Responsibility for the day-to-day operations of the Chisinau International Airport has been granted to a Russian company for a period of 49 years.
Valeriu Lazar, Moldova's deputy prime minister and economy minister, announced on September 4 that the tender's winner, Komaks, will invest up to 244 million euros in the airport. Komaks runs the largest airport in Russia's Far East city of Khabarovsk.
Seven international companies initially took part in the tender, but five later withdrew for reasons that were not made public.
Komaks is owned and run by Konstantin Basyuk, who has ties to the Alyans business group of brothers Musa and Mavlit Bazhaev from Chechnya.
