Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Visits Kazan

Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Nils Muiznieks

KAZAN, Russia -- The Council of Europe's commissioner for human rights, Nils Muiznieks, has started a trip to Russia with a visit to Tatarstan.

In the Tatar capital Kazan on April 5, Muiznieks met with Tatarstan's President Rustam Minnikhanov, Ombudswoman Sariya Saburskaya, and other officials.

Muiznieks said at the meeting that he began his visit in Kazan in order to first get acquainted with the situation surrounding human rights in Russia's regions.

Muiznieks is also scheduled to meet with local rights activists on April 5.

He plans to visit Moscow and St. Petersburg later on during his trip.

The death of a man allegedly beaten and raped in police custody in Kazan last year sparked protests against police torture across Russia.
