Counterterrorism Operation Held In Russia's Daghestan

A counterterrorism operation has been launched in Russia's volatile North Caucasus region of Daghestan.

Law enforcement officials in Makhachkala, Daghestan’s capital, say that the operation began in the republic's western district of Karabudakhkent early in the morning on April 29.

According to the officials, security troops and police are implementing "measures to track down and neutralize members of illegal armed groups and their accomplices."

Daghestan has been plagued by violence linked to Islamic extremism and organized crime for years.
