Officials in Russia's North Caucasus region of Daghestan say an investigation has been launched after a burned-out car with the bodies of two men was found on August 8 in the southeastern village of Dyuzlyar.
Investigative Committee spokesman Rasul Temirbekov said on August 9 that the two men had been identified.
According to Temirbekov, a preliminary probe indicated the two were transporting an explosive device when it accidentally detonated inside the vehicle.
In a related development, Daghestani officials said police had found two improvised explosive devices in the region's central region of Gergebil on August 8.
Daghestan has been at the epicenter of a wave of violence by armed criminal groups and militants seeking to establish an Islamic caliphate in the North Caucasus.
Organized crime, business turf wars, political disputes, and clan rivalry also contribute to the bloodshed in the region.
