Iraqi officials say a Shi’ite member of parliament was among at least 25 people killed by a suicide car bomber who attacked a checkpoint at the entrance to one of Baghdad’s Shi’ite neighborhoods on October 14.
Police said Ahmad al-Khafaji, a member of the Shi'ite Badr political party, was killed by the blast on the edge of the Kadhimiya neighborhood, which is home to the Shi'ite shrine of Imam Kahdim.
Khafaji reportedly was traveling to Kadhimiya to visit the Imam Kadhim shrine.
There have been almost daily suicide and car bomb attacks in Shi’ite neighborhoods in Baghdad and across Iraq for several weeks as government forces and U.S.-led air strikes have targetted Sunni-led Islamic State militants in northern and western Iraq.
Hundreds have been killed in such attacks during the past week.
