An Egyptian court has sentenced 529 supporters of ousted President Muhammad Morsi and his Muslim Brotherhood party to death.

A defense lawyer, Ahmad al-Sharif, said those sentenced were found guilty of many different charges, including attacking policemen and the murder of a police officer during violent demonstrations in August.

The ruling can be appealed.

Sharif said 16 Muslim Brotherhood supporters were acquitted.

The case against the 545 supporters has been delayed and postponed several times.

Defense lawyers said they had no time to present their case in court.

Many of those convicted were tried in absentia.
