A spokesman for Egypt’s presidency says Mohamed ElBaradei has not been officially appointed prime minister.
The statement contradicted earlier reports saying the former head of the United Nations nuclear watchdog agency had been named prime minister.
The spokesman said interim President Adly Mansour met July 6 with ElBaradei, but no official appointment has been made.
Spokesman Ahmed al-Muslimani added, however, that the Nobel Peace Prize laureate was a "logical choice" for prime minister.
The Nour Party, Egypt's second biggest Islamist movement, has said it opposes ElBaradei and has threatened to withdraw its support for last week's military-backed overthrow of President Mohamed Morsi.
In another development, the White House said the United States is “not aligned” with any party or political group in Egypt following the ouster of Morsi.
