U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry has told Egyptian President Muhammad Morsi that he needs to work harder to bridge the political divide in his country.
Kerry also pledged an initial $250 million in U.S. aid for Egypt.
In a statement issued after his talks in Cairo with Morsi, Kerry said “it is clear that more hard work and compromise” is required to “restore unity, political stability, and economic health to Egypt.”
The remarks came as Kerry wrapped up a two-day visit to Egypt with what was described as a “candid” meeting with Morsi.
He said Washington is ready to provide the first $190 million of a pledged $450 million in budget support funds.
He said Washington also has pledged an additional $60 million for a joint-enterprise fund.
