Top government officials and many others offered Eid al-Adha prayers at the King Faisal Mosque in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad. The July 21 ceremony was followed by the ritual slaughtering of animals, an important component of the Eid festival. During the holiday period, Muslims slaughter animals in symbolic homage to the story of the prophet Ibrahim and his willingness to sacrifice his first son as an act of supplication to God.
