Fired Kyrgyz Prosecutor Says Will Prove Innocence

Baibolov Kubatbek accused President Roza Otunbaeva and her circle of corruption.

BISHKEK -- Kyrgyzstan's fired prosecutor-general says he and his wife will vindicate themselves in court against the charges that led to his firing, RFE/RL's Kyrgyz Service reports.

President Roza Otunbaeva dismissed Kubatbek Baibolov on March 31 for, as was officially announced, his wife's involvement in illegal financial activities with MegaCom, the country's leading communications service provider.

Baibolov said in parliament today that he and his wife were ready to prove their innocence in court.

He accused Otunbaeva and her associates of being corrupt and promised to make public the name of a political party that used "other peoples' money for its election campaign last year."

Baibolov said he had enough information to prove the involvement of First Deputy Prime Minister Omurbek Babanov in illegal financial activities.

"Under the leadership of Roza Otunbaeva, the country's Committee for National Security turned into a monstrous organization," Baibolov told parliament.

The leader of the Ata-Jurt (Homeland) party, Kamchybek Tashiev, said that if the accusations against Babanov were proven, his party would leave the three-party coalition government.

His statement prompted a rude reply from Altynbek Sulaimanov, a deputy from Babanov's Respublika party.

Sulaimanov was then confronted by Tashiev and the two traded punches in a brief scuffle.

Baibolov told RFE/RL today that his firing was a politically motivated decision made by Otunbaeva and done in preparation for the presidential election due in the fall.

He added that he believed Otunbaeva wants Prime Minister Almazbek Atambaev of her Social Democratic Party to become president. Baibolov said that Atambaev, in turn, wanted Babanov to be the next prime minister.

The ruling coalition is made up of Respublika, Ata-Jurt, and the Social Democratic Party.
