A former commander for Russia's Wagner mercenary group who fled to Norway has decided to return to Russia. Andrei Medvedev said on May 17 he had asked the Russian Embassy in Oslo for help as "it hasn't worked out" in Norway. Medvedev said his decision was made of his own free will, adding that he understands his return may be "dangerous." Medvedev has said he fears for his life after witnessing the extrajudicial killings of some Wagner troops by others from the group while fighting in Ukraine.
