Fourteen migrants were hit by a train and killed late on April 23 while walking on a railway near the central city of Veles, according to the Macedonian Interior Ministry.
Initial media reports said a group of around 50 migrants were moving along a very narrow railway in an area called Pcinja, which is accessible only by foot or railway.
Eight migrants were detained and are currently at the police station in Veles, while a bigger group of migrants ran from the site of the incident.
Macedonia’s state prosecutor has said that most of the migrants were from Afghanistan and Somalia.
The Western Balkan countries are commonly used as a transit land route for migrants trying to reach western Europe.
