France Holding First Official Gay Wedding

Police and protesters clashed May 26 in Paris over France's new law permitting gay marriage and adoption.

The first official gay wedding is due to take place in France following passage of the country’s controversial gay marriage and adoption law.

The two men, Vincent and Bruno, were due to be married May 29 at the city hall in the southern city of Montpellier.

Extra police are being deployed to guard the ceremony amid continuing discord over the new law.

Tens of thousands of people protested the law in Paris on May 26, and scores of people were reported arrested when demonstrators clashed with police.

Opponents of the law, who are supported by religious groups and some right-wing political groups, say they want to preserve the tradition of children having as parents one male and one female.

France is the 14th country in the world to permit gay marriage.
