French, Iranian Leaders Agree To Cooperate After Nuclear Deal

French President Francois Hollande has conferred with his Iranian counterpart, Hassan Rohani, and the two agreed to "step up bilateral cooperation," Hollande's office said.

Hollande "expressed the wish for Iran to contribute positively to the resolution of crises in the Middle East," it added.

Rohani tweeted that "Hollande welcomes #IranDeal and Iran's constructive role in the negotiations, which is fostering peace in the region."

The conversation marks the latest step by European leaders since the deal was announced on July 14 to renew trade ties with Tehran and recruit Iran's help in tackling the Islamic State militant group in Iraq and Syria, among other regional problems.

German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel visited Iran earlier this week. French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius is scheduled to visit on July 29.

Austrian President Heinz Fischer in September will make the first visit to Iran by a European head of state since 2004, his office said.

The deal was adopted by the UN Security Council on July 20.
