French authorities say it is too early to know whether the stabbing of a French soldier has a link to the murder of a British soldier last week by suspected Islamic extremists.
The French soldier, who was wearing a uniform, was stabbed in the throat on May 25 as he carried out an antiterrorist patrol in the La Defense business district outside Paris.
Officials said the 23-year-old soldier was expected to survive.
President Francois Hollande said the identity of the attacker, who escaped, was unknown. He cautioned against making hasty conclusions about the assault.
Defense Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian said, however, that it appears that the man had been targeted because he was a soldier.
A British soldier was stabbed to death on a London street on May 22 by suspected Islamic extremists.
British police have arrested three more suspects in
connection with that murder.
Scotland Yard said that two men, 24 and 28, were detained in southeast London. A third man, 21, was arrested separately.
Police said they used a stun gun against two of the suspects when they were detained.
All three men have been detained on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder.
Further details on their connection to the murder were not immediately available.
The two Islamist suspects accused of carrying out the murder were shot and wounded by police and are under guard in two separate hospitals.
