Georgian Activists Protest Russian Lawmakers' Presence At Soccer Match

Dozens of youth activists have protested against the presence of Russian lawmakers at a soccer match in Tbilisi.

Activists of The Free Zone nongovernmental organization gathered on July 8 in front of the Courtyard Marriott hotel in Tbilisi, where Russian soccer players and their supporters were staying.

The protesters also demanded an official explanation regarding the detention of three members of the group on July 7.

That day, Georgian youth activists protested the presence of Russian State Duma deputies at the soccer match between visiting Dinamo Moscow and Dinamo Tbilisi.

They held a large sign reading, "A Single Georgia With No Occupiers!"

Police dispersed the protesters, detaining the three activists.

Russian-Georgian relations have been tense since a short military conflict in August 2008, after which Moscow recognized independence of Georgia's breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia and deployed its troops there.
