TBILISI -- The U.S. assistant secretary of state for European and Eurasian affairs, Victoria Nuland, has hailed Georgia's "remarkable progress" in meetings with top officials in Tbilisi.
Nuland met with President Giorgi Margvelashvili and congratulated Georgia on its "free and fair" presidential election in October and for initialing a deal for closer ties with the EU in Vilnius last week.
Margvelashvili told Nuland that Georgia faced a "difficult" year as it aims to pass the reforms and legislation necessary to sign an Association Agreement with the EU next fall.
Nuland also met with Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili and Defense Minister Irakli Alasania.
Nuland hailed Georgia's "remarkable progress" in developing democratic institutions and reiterated the U.S. commitment "to promote Georgia’s democracy, security, and prosperity."
Nuland next visits Moscow on December 8-10.
