Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili says he has dismissed Defense Minister Irakli Alasania.
Garibashvili said on November 4 that Mindia Janelidze, from his office, will replace Alasania.
The announcement came hours after Alasania said recent arrests of Defense Ministry and general staff officials, as well as newly filed charges against army medical officers are “obviously politically” motivated and represented an “attack on Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic choice.”
Earlier on November 4, three army medical officers and three employees of a state-owned food provider company in Georgia were charged with negligence that led to the food poisoning of hundreds of servicemen last year.
Those facing charges include the head of the general staff’s medical department, the chief medical officials of two infantry brigades as well as three employees of the Georgian Food Company.
Last year, hundreds of servicemen suffered from food poisoning in separate cases.
One former and four current senior military officials were arrested last week on suspicion of misusing state funds.
