Georgian Prime Minister To Sign EU Association Agreement

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili, and not President Giorgi Margvelashvili, will sign an Association Agreement with the EU on June 27.

The presidential secretary in parliament, Davit Pataraya, told journalists in Tbilisi on May 27 that Margvelashvili will issue a special decree granting Garibashvili the right to sign the deal in Brussels.

Last week, the Georgian cabinet's press service said the prime minister should sign the agreement in order to avoid unnecessary bureaucracy, since the Georgian Constitution requires government approval of any international act signed by the president.

Some nongovernmental organizations and opposition members in Georgia have called the government's decision illegal, saying it is the result of an ongoing confrontation between the president and prime minister.

Last week, in comments to Imedi TV, Margvelashvili dismissed reports about bad blood between him and Garibashvili.
