Georgia's Prime Minister Irakli Garibashvili has fired his foreign minister, replacing her with the economy minister.

In a surprise move, Garibashvili announced on September 1 that Foreign Minister Tamar Beruchashvili will be replaced by Economy Minister Giorgi Kvirikashvili.

Garibashvili thanked Beruchashvili, who was appointed foreign minister in November 2014, for "the successful work she has done."

"The government's focus is on economic development and job creation and this goal determines our foreign policy and internal economic agenda," the prime minister added.

Kvirikashvili will be replaced as economy minister by Tbilisi Deputy Mayor Dimitry Kumsishvili.
