Ghani Presents Afghan Cabinet Picks To Parliament

Some parliament members have threatened not to give their vote of confidence to the many nominees who have dual citizenship.

Afghan President Ashraf Ghani has presented his cabinet nominees to parliament for a vote of confidence.

In his speech to the lower parliament house on January 20, Ghani said, "We have tried our best to introduce a proper cabinet, responsible and accountable before the people."

Also facing a confirmation vote will be the nominees for intelligence chief and central bank director.

Ghani’s efforts to forge a "unity" government with Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah took more than three months due to wrangling over key positions following a disputed presidential election.

Some parliament members have threatened not to give their vote of confidence to the many nominees who have dual citizenship.

Missing from the proceedings was Mohammad Yaqub Haidari, the nominee to oversee the country's Agriculture Ministry. He has been alleged to hold dual citizenship and to be on an Interpol most-wanted list.
